Who We Are
Mission: To provide refuge for the companion animals of survivors who have left domestic violence situations, preserving the vital relationship between these animals and their families, and advocating society’s responsibility to protect them from the trauma of abuse.
Sasawin Safe Haven, established in 2013, is a program of the Women’s Center of Marquette County, Michigan. By focusing on the human-animal bond, Sasawin Safe Haven plays a crucial role in helping survivors escape abusive situations without the added concern of leaving their pets behind.
What We Do
Sasawin Safe Haven offers a range of services to support survivors and their pets:
- Safety Planning: Assisting survivors in creating plans that include the safety of their pets.
- Emergency Pet Housing: Providing foster care for pets while survivors seek safe housing.
- Veterinary Care: Offering medical attention, including preventive care and treatment for injuries or health conditions resulting from abuse.
- Behavioral Consultations: Addressing behavioral issues in pets to facilitate a smoother transition for both pets and survivors.
These services are provided at no cost to survivors, ensuring that the well-being of both individuals and their pets is prioritized during the recovery process.
