Who We Are
Mission: To provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
Area 36 Special Olympics Michigan serves athletes in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, providing year-round sports training and competitive opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. As part of Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI), Area 36 offers a variety of sporting events, including basketball, track and field, swimming, and more. The aim is to enhance the physical fitness, skills, and well-being of participants while fostering courage and friendship among athletes, families, and the community.
What We Do
The area works closely with volunteers and coaches to ensure athletes have the support they need to succeed. Competitions are organized at local, regional, and state levels, contributing to a sense of community and inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities. Area 36, like other Special Olympics programs, is sustained by donations, volunteers, and community partnerships, and emphasizes the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
